Dave Ekins, who made one of the first attempts at finishing the uncharted Baja California stretch from Tijuana to La Paz, almost 1,000 miles away. Dave and buddy Bill Robertson, Jr. took on the task, mounted on newly-minted Honda CL72 250cc Scramblers, in essentially stock condition. They made the trek in just under 40 hours, riding out at midnight, under a full moon fifty years ago this weekend. They were being supported by a couple of Cessna airplanes, equipped with food, gasoline and spare parts. The planes could only fly during the daylight hours, so the bikes and planes leapfrogged each other for nearly two days.
